The Basics of Poker

Poker is a card game played by 2 or more players with the aim of winning the pot. A pot is the total sum of all bets placed in a single deal, and can be won by having the best poker hand or making a bet that no other player calls. There are a variety of poker games that can be played with anywhere from two to 14 players. However the ideal number of players for a poker game is between 6 and 8 people.

The first betting round begins after everyone has received their two hole cards. Each player must either call the amount of the bet made by the player to their left or raise it. Each player also has the option of “dropping” (folding).

Once the first betting round is over the dealer puts three community cards on the table that anyone can use. This is called the flop. A second betting round then takes place.

It is important to play only with money that you are willing to lose. This is especially true if you are just starting out. A good rule of thumb is to make sure that you can afford to lose 200 bets at the highest limit you play. If you can’t, then it is probably time to move on to a different game.
