What Is a Slot?

In aviation, a time slot is an allocation of space at an airport for takeoffs and landings. Air traffic controllers use this system to manage aircraft traffic and avoid overloading the airspace. It also helps to keep flight schedules on track.

A slot can be used in a wide variety of ways. In some cases, it is used to refer to the position of a bolt or other fastener in a component or assembly, as well as to the hole or opening into which it fits. In other cases, it is simply used to describe a location in a component or assembly that is sized for a specific fastener.

Historically, electromechanical slot machines only allowed for a few different symbols to appear on the reels, so each symbol would appear infrequently. This limited the size of jackpots and made it difficult to predict a win. When microprocessors were introduced, manufacturers could assign a different probability for each stop on the reel and a particular symbol, allowing for much higher jackpot sizes.
